Texas King Interview
At Boots and Hearts on Saturday I got to sit down with London natives, Texas King. The Interview consisted of frontman Jordan MacDonald, Phil Spina, and Melvin Murray. We got a chance to peak into their summer and what’s coming next for the band.
We are here with Texas King. How are you guys doing today? Are you guys excited to be here?
Good. Yeah, very excited. We love it up here!
Is this the kind of stage you guys thought you'd never be playing?
This It's definitely on the list. I kinda chalked it up as a country festival. Maybe we never would, but sometimes you see bands playing it and you'd be like, ‘Oh, that'd be cool if we could do it.’ So Yeah. Happy to be here for sure.
It’s cool when festivals have a sort of bend to the genre that people are expecting. Even Matchbox 20 is here tonight.
Yeah. It’s not exactly country music. So Yeah. Fair enough. We're not the only, fish out of water.
You guys have had a busy summer, so is this one of the stops on your way?
This is the 2nd last festival of festival season for us this year, and it's been a great ride. We've had a fun summer and went out west and been around western Canada and around the Ottawa area. This is a nice way to end the summer for sure.
I know you guys played Blue Fest not too long ago, that would have been crazy.
Yeah. It was. Huge huge names and it’s been a summer. We ticked a lot off our bucket list in terms of festivals. So it's been different.
So now that you guys have a little bit of potential time off coming up, what are you guys gonna be doing?
We're putting out an album, so it's kind of ramping up into all that stuff now. We're really excited about that. But, you know, it’s everything like artwork and just making sure you don't forget to thank your mom and stuff like that. We're going through that whole process.
I saw you guys have covered Post Malone's chemical. That was fantastic. Is that something fans might see tonight?
Thank you. We recorded that in our basement. We might do a cover song. Is that vague enough? Gotta keep it mysterious.
So what would a show for you guys normally look like? I know pretty high energy.
Yeah. I'd get up there jumping around loud, like, high energy, loud, you know, sometimes I'll go bouncing off Phil or Josh there. We don't like to stand still. We'll pay a visit to Melly back at the drum raiser. Keep it moving. You're only up there for 45 minutes. May as well get a little sweat in.
What would you guys say you're most excited to perform this weekend?
You know, it’s this whole mystery thing. We will be playing a brand new one. An unreleased song that's going to be on the new record that I was talking about before. it's always the most fun when you get to play a new one because you have fewer repetitions under your belt. The new stuff's always, at least for the band, the most fun to play.
So far what’s been the moment where you're thinking, “Oh my god. This is amazing.”
MM: For one, pulling up today. That’s a good one.
JM: I had that moment when we were playing in Banff one night, looking up at the mountains
while playing. I was like, this is pretty cool. The places the music takes you kind of popped into my head. So that was obviously really cool. Ottawa Blues was great. This summer's has been really cool.
PS: Anytime we're on tour and we find ourselves on the other side of the continent, I kind of
have that feeling. We're driving through Arizona or in California or something. It's always once on a tour, I kind of have that feeling.
JM: On Business, this is what it must feel like.
PS: Places people would pay money to go on vacation, and we just get to hang out for a few
days because we’re gonna play 30 minutes. You know what I mean? It's always nice.
Who are you guys most excited to see perform? If you're hanging around at all?
Matchbox 20 would would be cool to see. Yeah. They're probably the ones I'm looking forward to today. I'm looking forward to seeing Elise Saunders play before us too. I've heard a lot of rumble about her, and we've shared a guitar player before, so yeah, I wanna hear her.
I know you guys don't have much time off with everything getting much busier, but if you
do have time off, where can people normally find you guys?
JM: At the barbecue, sitting up on my spool. Just chilling around the house making more music, and sometimes I'll be playing in cafes, or breweries or bars, stuff like that acoustically.
PS: Typically, if I have time off, I’ll go camping or fishing with my partner.
MM: I like to play more drums. There’s been a lot of drumming lately.
JM: Video games too. It's not real. You know?
